SPACE ROCKET RANGER-7 - YONEZAWA - JAPANA variation of the Fire Rocket X-0077, a cross between a space rocket and jet plane. Two pilots under a clear plastic canopy.
A blue and red lithographed tin friction rocket. 38cm long. The large fins resemble wings. Marked R-7. Spark windows surround the rear exhaust. Circa 1960. Advances with siren and spark.

UNIVERSE TELEVIBOAT ME777 - CHINAThis is a substantial and ambitious Chinese rocket ship. The 13" 33cm tin lithographed rocket, the one that forms the basis of the Rocket Racer 7, has a large tail fin with a lighted rocket engine at the top. There are additional red lights fitted to the ends of the side wings. A large tin astronaut with a blue vinyl head is fixed on top and he holds a TV camera. Television Boat. Bump and go battery operated action with noise and flashing lights. The rocket stops, the astronaut operates the camera, then the action repeats. ME-777? ATOMIC ROCKET WITH PROP - MASUDAYA - JAPANA white, red and blue lithographed tin friction rocket. The three wheeled rocket has the classic three rear fins design. The fins extend beyond the end of the body. There is minimal detailing, notably a blue lightning flash on the tail.

The distinctive feature of the rocket is the spinner launch action. See Satellite Launcher Rocket.

This rocket shares the same box as the Atomic Rocket with Prop X201.

MECHANICAL ROCKET U-2 - PRIFTIS - GREECEMetallic blue and red lithographed friction powered tinplate Space Rocket. The rocket has a red plastic canopy with pilot inside. At the back is a cylindrical yellow plastic structure with three fins. Runs on wide plastic wheels. Friction action with noise and spark. Pi Logo. There are several litho versions of this rocket including the lower one with the elaborate exhaust litho. The maker Ananiades has also been suggested.

SPARKLING SPACE RANGER L-5776 - SI - JAPANMetallic blue red and yellow lithographed tin friction rocket. 7 inches. Circa 1950's. Three red tail fins, one marked L-5776. The space rocket has a lithographed canopy and pilot. A variation exists marked X-36 on tail fin. Long tailfins extend well behind the exhaust. Friction action with spark and noise. The significance of the serial number and reason for the variation is not known. SI in a Diamond logo.

Probably shipped in the same box as the X-36 which carries no markings on the artwork.

SUPER SONIC SPACE ROCKET BATTERY OPERATED VERSION - YOSHIYA - JAPANBlue lithographed battery operated tinplate space rocket with two large rocket engines with tailfins mounted on either side of a central fuselage. Three rear fins. Hollow metal wheels. The front has a large litho window at the front with pilot and instrument panel being shown. The front is rounded with a Zeppelin like airship style. MARS RATTAN AIR X-300 SPACESHIP - INDIAThis is an spaceship with an interesting pedigree. The original spaceship that it is based on is the hard plastic Pyro Space Scout X-100. Alps copied it in tin as the Mars Dream Jet, and finally it has been manufactured in India as the Mars X-300, Rattan Air. Asia

This is a yellow and red lithographed space rocket, a cross between a spaceship and a jet plane. Litho pilot cockpit detailing. A simple hollow pressing with a friction mechanism positioned under the front end.

MOON RANGER SPACE CAR - KOTA - HONG KONGLarge blue plastic battery operated space rocket with plastic pilot under a clear plastic dome. Four holes in each side aft of the canopy. Red lights in the nose area. This is a Chinese variation of the sonicon style toy operated by a whistle. Marked Kota, Hong Kong

A 1968 Denver Post article says of this toy: "switched whistle that operates a sound-sensitve membrane in the .... The unit switches on power supplied by regular flashlight ..... ignores all sound but the whistle and shuts itself off automatically after 30 seconds. It is made by a Hong Kong .... company"

SPACE CRUISER X-300 - TELEX - FINLANDA version of Pyro's X-300 Space Cruiser. Called RYMD RAKET on the box. Silver colored hard plastic with red wheels. SPACE CRUISER molded on the sides. This example is missing its pilot. 10 ins long with a distinctive needle on the end of the nose cone. It has a shorter upper and lower rear tail fin than the Pyro version, parts that are susceptible to damage. Marked Telex on the underside. Wittrock has been identified as the actual maker. TORPEDO BOAT - CHINAIt's often said that the Chinese call their rockets "boat" because they have made a literal translation of "ship". In this case they've added the word Torpedo for no obvious reason. This little blue, white and red lithographed tin friction rocket has a couple of interesting features. First is the odd shape of the cockpit canopy, it's atall thin bubble dome covering a pilot head. Second, there are three distinctive white plastic fins at the back. Long spark windows in the sides. DIAN DONG DA FEI CHAN (ROCKET SHIP) - CHINARed white and blue lithographed tin battery operated space ship with vinyl pilot head behind a tin windscreen. The distinguishing feature of this range is the pair of red and green colored plastic spark windows at the front of the rocket. Another variation of the Masudaya Rocket Racer. Other versons have been seen in this box but here the litho on the toy corresponds with the box artwork - eg portholes. Box and spaceship combinations seem to be random: Box has No 8, toy has No 9. etc. Two litho variations shown.

SPACE BOAT No 3 - CHINAThe styling of this rare Space Boat is quite unique for a Chinese toy and is reminiscent of Japanese vehicles. This silver tinplate friction space ship with a red upper section. There's a rounded front with a clear plastic dome containing an astronaut pilot. There are two fins at the back. PROBE FORCE No 3 - PROJECT SWORD - CENTURY 21Century 21 - chunky plastic space - plane with friction drive and siren sound. The plastic wings are detachable.
Rectangular one - piece box with great artwork showing the ship , painted, zooming through space. 'Star Features' are 'powerful friction drive', 'realistic siren sound' and 'sword insignia'. It states that it is 'Made in Hong Kong for Century 21 Toys limited'. Unusually, the artwork of the ship only appears on two of the four sides. The other two contain a large Project sword emblem and the above manufacturers details on a largely yellow (with some red) background.

PROBE FORCE No 2 - PROJECT SWORD - CENTURY 21Century 21 Toys- This plastic friction space rocket is titled 'Probe Force No.2' on the box. Its plastic, about a foot long and coloured off- white. Has a bit of an XL-5 look to it, but with extra fins. The exhaust area is bright red translucent plastic, as is the cockpit . Has 'made in Hong Kong' on the base.
The box is a one parter of thin card. The 'Star features' on the front and rear are ' Powerful friction drive, realistic siren sound, SWORD insignia.' The Astronaut badge is advertised as being inside with the free Manual. A sheet of thick card came as inner- packaging. 1967

PROBE FORCE No 1 - HOVERVery long grey plastic friction drive rocket spaceship just like the Probe Force Flight 1. The box cover is a colour photograph of the ship flying through space past a huge gas cloud. Hover logo. Based on the Project Sword vehicle and carries SWORD logo on tailfin. BOOSTER ROCKET - PROJECT SWORD - CENTURY 21A long plastic battery op rocket with its middle encircled by large white plastic ‘fuel’ pods which are detachable. The ship has forward and reverse motion, tail lights and a cool silver ejecting nose jet with its own landing gear/wheels ( you may come across this on its own). 'Made in Hong Kong' appears on its base.

The box is tiny compared to the size of the fully set-up toy. Nevertheless the artwork is great, with a white and red painiting of the rocket whizzing across space. 'Star Features' are the ' Ejectable nose module, battery operated, forward and reverse control, tail light, official SWORD decals'. As standard it states that its 'Made in Hong Kong for Century 21 Toys Limited.' The cover doesn't refer to thje badge or manual, only the four sides of the lid. It's referred to as the 'Space Captains badge', but the picture of the badge simply states Captain. The full badge list appears including astronaut.

APOLLO SATURN ROCKET - PROJECT SWORD - Century 21 Hong KongCentury 21 – tall plastic rocket in 3 stages. Plastic battery op rocket , this craft has flashing lights and a spring-loaded parachuting nose-cone. On its main body appear two transfers stating ' Apollo Saturn' .It looks like a big Cape- Kennedy- Set rocket. On the base is written ' A 21 Toy ' with the familiar tunnel-like circles, together with 'Century 21 Toys Ltd Made in Hong Kong'.
The box is a long narrow rectangular two parter. The lid is of thinner card with the base being much thicker. Two pieces of thick card inner- packaging hold the rocket in place at either end of the box. 'Star Features' are 'Ejectable space capsule with parachute, battery operated, hand steerable front wheel, three stage rocket, lights at rear, clips on fins.' It states that it's 'Made in Hong Kong for Century 21 Toys Limited'. On the two longest sides appears the words 'This super badge - Sword Commander - free inside, plus official manual, Project SWORD, collect the series for other great SWORD badges, Century 21 Limited'. The Commander badge is red.

COMMANDER ROCKET ATOMIC CONSTRUCTOR - YOSHIYA - JAPAN 1962A silver lithographed tinplate rocket. Litho details include a cockpit with pilot, tracks and the wording Commander on the sides. Three red metal fins at the back. The vehicle has a passing similarity to the Thiunderbird Mole with its rotating nose structure and its drilling function is mentioned on the box. In this case the nose is a rotating red plastic structure consisting of a set of plastic ribs. Friction action with noise and spark from the nose structure.

The box syas "Atomic Constructor. Flys in the air. Goes over lands. Digs and goes under ground too". First sighted in 1962 Nerlish & Co. Catalog. KO

SKYMASTER ROCKET - HEC? - INDIAA novelty rocket from India. Designed for the young child is this tin friction rocket. If you look hard enough you can see traces of its origin in the Yoshiya Commander Rocket. This is a very brightly decorated rocket with the cartoon lithography popular on many Indian toys.
