DAN DARE SET - CRESCENT TOYS - ENGLANDA boxed set of seven spacemen and pieces of equipment. The figures are hollow cast lead and are hand painted. This can lead to some variation in the colors of individual items. The equipment is a rocket and rocket launcher. (The top set probably has a missing rocket replaced with a figure).

The sets can vary in their composition and I have shown four combinations. All sets feature Dan Dare in either his space suit or RAF uniform or both. A Treen or Meekon green alien also appears.

All come in the same card box with a graphic display of a rocket launch site with Dan Dare. One or two of the figures are prone to metal fatigue, particularly the rocket launcher.

The set was announced in September 1951 in Eagle 2:22. Price 5/-

DAN DARE SPACE MEN - MERIT - ENGLANDBoxed set of hard brittle plastic spacemen based on the Archer originals. Seven figures, six hard plastic spacemen and the robot in various colors.

These English figures were made from the same molds as the American Archer versions, therefore are identical. All the examples I have see have the sans-serif PAT PENDING wording. Kleeware and Tudor Rose used the molds; Merit must have obtained them from one of these companies. Merit was the trading name of J & L Randall.

hausser.jpg
ELASTOLIN SPACEMEN - HAUSSER - W GERMANYSet of four plastic space figure. Boxed set with a space scene background.

Plastic Space Series, comprising:
Model No. 8310 - Spaceman with Removable Transparent Helmet,
Model No. 8302 - "Jupiter Gorilla"
Model No. 8303 - "Saurus Saturn"
Model No. 8304 - "Venus Amazonia" [the only figures released].

The figures are made of polystyrene. The light blue of the spaceman has a shimmer of nacre.
The scale is 1:25, the spaceman has a size of 7cm. The group only appeared in Hausser´s Elastolin catalogue from 1960. The space figures were a flop.
Around 1980 a short while before Hausser went out of business, they were sold in toy shops again. It was the dead stock from 1960s.

Note: The clawed spaceman: back in the 1950's it was unclear if space suit gloves were even possible. Some suit designers took a tip from deep sea diving suits and postulated mechanical pincers instead of gloves.

LEGION SPAZIALE - MAKER? - ITALYA carded set of 45mm hard plastic figures in four poses. The cards contain a random selection of five figures from the four Archer-Premier poses. The quality of these figures is rather variable. The plastic varies enormously in color and definition. They are the specific Tudor Rose combination of poses. The angle of the pistol carrying figure has been altered. Maker and source are unknown but these have appeared in some quantity recently. The name, Space Legion, suggests an Italian origin. The best feature of this set is the backing card with a well drawn space landscape.
lOS_sELENITAS.jpg
LOS SELENITAS - TROVADOR - ARGENTINATranslates as Moon Men. This is a range of strange little bug-eye plastic aliens molded in white, yellow, red and green with gold paint detailing. Men_of_Mars_Archer.jpg
MEN OF MARS - ARCHER - USAArcher redesigned their original six figures (not including the robot) to create the Men of Mars set. The figures now have ridges on the helmets, exaggerated shoulder and elbow pads, and wide topped boots. The figures have no helmets. They are molded in hard plastic. Each figure comes with a red vinyl weapon and a yellow vinyl Astro-pac.

Apart from the styling the main innovation is the redesign of the figures with a slot hand, to allow the hands to hold separate weapons.

There were three sizes of set:
#719 One figure, two weapons and two Astro-Pacs. Bagged with header card
#749 Three figures, three weapons and three Astro-Pacs. Window box.
#798 Six figures, six weapons and six Astro-Pacs. Window box.

Underneath each flat base are the letters MP and the words Model Deposé (registered or copyrighted). Each flat base figure is numbered beginning with 500. The raised bases are hollowed out and are meant to be rock formations on which the figures stand. There are no markings underneath these figures. I have seen the MP figures in orange and yellow color variations. An distinctive feature of these figures is the small detachable air hoses that connect the helmet and the oxygen tank on each figure’s back.

These are 2.5" hand painted spacemen in poses which, in at least two cases, are close copies of the Thomas/Poplar spacemen. An interesting feature of the set is the fact that the arms of three of the figures are articulated. The high quality figures all had clear plastic helmets. The set has been dated to 1954, a year after the Thomas figures.

Reisler also manufactured three different size Moon craters for mounting the figures.

The set has been reissued by Reisler. The new figures are in white plastic with clear blue helmets.
