And these dated catalog covers:

Specifically:

The auction description does not say which of the catalogs this helmet is in, however all the catalogs are from 1954.

See Blast Off!, page 205 for a full color photo of this toy and its box, or click here:

These are three very nice catalog covers so I'll go ahead and save them. I never knew that the radar dishes on these goggles rotated! They are even cooler than I thought!

Here's another '54 sighting, this time, unquestionably, in a Marshall Field & Company (The Children's Flyer) Christmas 1954 catalog.

The dated cover:

Joe, do you have any wish books ?

I've got the Sears and Montgomery Ward catalog reprint books and a growing collection of F.A.O.Schwarz catalogs.

Joe and Fin,,I can without doubt put this item in at at least one year earlier ,,A few months ago I was selling at a toy fair in Surrey ,England,,You get quite a few traders from France and Belgium there ,,I bought this French magazine because it had such a striking cover ,,the kid on the cover is wearing the Space Helmet With Radar Goggles By Banner..The magazine is dated November 1953,One year earlier than your timeline.

Sparkrobot - Good work!! And it gives us a nice date for the Marx Tom Corbett Space Cadet Atomic Rifle too (to my knowledge this is the first mention of this rifle in the timeline). Very nice, I remember when you first posted that cover - I can't believe we didn't use the date for the timeline then!

Hi there Sparkrobot

Is there any chance of you helping me out with a high resolution and good quality scan of this magazine cover?

I am collecting images of the Space Helmet, and I would love to have a copy of this really cool magazine photo :)

Came across this in the card section of my local supermarket:

Inside it says: "Hang in there".

The 5" x 7" card is distributed by

(Thanks, Randy! Your scan 'n post services are always greatly appreciated.)

I didn't win it. I do have a copy of the French magazine with this picture on the cover though. It goes nicely with the rifle and the helmet/goggles.

Does anyone know anything about the rest of the costume? This new info makes it sound like the suit was available for sale.

I believe the costume is part of the Flash Gordon Space Outfit, as seen in this 1952-53 Toy Fair catalog:
