In the glorious past, oh! days of innocence and delight!,
when this forum was not yet regulated by passwords, PIN's, log's, blogs
and a number of other electronic niceties,
it was possible to assume each other's identity.
As the more senile members of this board might remember,
-or due to the same qualification- have forgotten-,
we had a whale of a time playing Ernie Mannix, mrs. Davidson and the
unforgettable "Eric, the terrible".
The greatest confusion I managed to cause, was when the flowerpot was
offered the first time. Even though now sternly deprived of the means for such
capers, I kind of feel sad it has forever landed on the "Rare Robot shelf".
Although.. as the criteria for this display mainly seem to be the amount of
money, obvious to all, spend on the selection, it might be a worthy destination.
--As the robot is not beautiful does nothing very interesting, but most certainly is expensive!
BTW, Steve and Robert, I am struck (not angry, not angry, not angry!!)
by the way my irony gets ironised. Is that the Ocean between us?

I personally think that the desire to own a piece of robot history and/or something extremely rare or even unique strictly for the sake of the rarity (ie regardless of its lack of beauty) is completely valid. Congrats to clowntrigger. Maybe we'll see the famous flower robot again someday in it's new home. I wonder if Ernie Mannix still reads Alphadrome? It did seem like a coincidence that the flower robot popped up on ebay a week after it was discussed here in the rarities thread. Henk - just to be clear, are you referring to the flower robot as the prototype for the later version Attacking Martian? Or did you have another robot in mind?

I agree with FJW. Personally, I don't love the robot's looks. However, I think there's something to be said for owning something rare, something that's got some history that everyone can identify, something that's worked its way into the lore of the hobby. Why the heck not?
Aesthetic appeal isn't the only way someone can enjoy a toy. When we say, Buy what you like, the "like" part can be for any number of reasons.
So congratulations, Clowntrigger. I look forward to seeing photos of it in its new home.
