Gort Saucer

Electric Robot and Son

Several years ago I built a large (32" diameter) solar powered flying saucer piloted by Robby the Robot for my sons garden. It spends spring, summer and fall outside in the garden and winters in the upstairs robot/raygun room. This past spring when I moved the saucer outside I thought the robot room looked really empty, So I decided to build another saucer to leave inside year round. Gort graciously agreed to pilot the saucer. Here are some pics.

The robby saucer was designed to stand on a pole, this one is made to hang from above.

It is also capable of beaming up inquisitive X-file agents.

You can't really tell from the pictures but it has 5 sequencing LEDs on the bottom of the saucer dish. Gort has a red disintegrating ray eminating from under his visor. When I was adding this I realized I didn't know what color to make it because the movie was black and white. I tried white and red, and the red looked better so I went with that. There are two space displays made from keychain photo viewers. I loaded deep space photos from the hubble and keplar telescopes. When the power is turned on, the viewers sequence through the pictures automatically. The astro-navigator sphere is made from the remains of an old star projector and a mini windup saucer.
