Thanks Mike & Dirk :) , to address David's point, anything done at the factory I consider a variation even a mistake. As for this particular robot I'm not sure how to ever prove it was done at the factory but looking at all the factors I tend to think it was. This is only my opinion. I'll scour through old pics & auctions & see if there's anything similar however this might be a one off just like the blue headed kitahara version. Mistakes can be pretty valuable at times Mistake at the Factory BTW- I have the powder instructions already (original) Not sure if I had the remote instructions or if I even saw the remote instructions prior to.
I agree Ken that this was most likely done at the factory. The robot has it's original powder packet among other thing. It's inconceivable that it was never used yet someone decided to swap eyes after the fact. Anyway I'm biased since I purchased it ;) When It arrives if anyone wants to see additional pics I'd be happy to post I have extra original standard clear eyes as well but prefer the look of these. Gives it nice character IMHO
The marketing was very weak. Word of mouth though & cinema scores were high. The small setting allowed the budget to be spent on the robot effects wisely thankfully. It gave me both a Blade Runner & West World Vibe & it set up a sequel nicely. I told my wife I need these new robots in my collection. She rolled her eyes
Well the robot has been in 2 well established collections & you would think the owners would have changed the eyes if they felt they were incorrect. The same thing was thought of the Marx electric robot with painted eyes until John figured out they were correct due to the 1.5 voltage Then there is the blue headed variation in Kitahara's book which is another weird anomoly I do think these eyes are more common in vintage battery op animals but is it really out of the realm of possibilities that someone at the factory grabbed these? They seem to depict the eyes from the box art more accurately than the standard eyes . I could see it either way
This example recently on ebay is pretty much MIB All inserts & instructions While the eyes resemble the R-35 , the R-35 does not have black pupils with a white outline. Given the condition of the robot I think this may have been a factory selection Thoughts ?
