I was thinking we should have a single thread for keeping track of the Masudaya catalog numbers as seen on the box lids. We started to keep track of these numbers in this thread about the Target robot when Joe K. formulated his theory of the Gang of Five timeline based on these catalog numbers (or used these numbers to prove his existing theory).

http://danefield.com/alpha/forums/index.ph...0&hl=machineman

Gernot's recent thread "Alphadrome detective game no. 3" provided some more documentation of these useful catalog numbers.

http://danefield.com/alpha/forums/index.ph...t=ST&f=2&t=3191

A re-cap of the documented numbers so far-

From Joe-
1958 - Radicon Robot - no # on box
1960 - Non-Stop (Lavender) Robot - #3058
1961/62 - Machine Man - also #3058
1963 - Giant Sonic (Train) Robot - #3223
1963/64 - Shooting Giant Robot - #3357
1965 - (Target) Robot - also #3357

Gernot's contributions (hopefully more are on the way from Gernot)-
Sonicon Rocket (blue?) #3043
Supersonic Moon ship #3137

I have four Masudaya flying saucer boxes to contribute.

X-17 Space Patrol #3117. Future toys page 135 item #204.
X-8 Space Explorer Ship #3678. Future toys page 169 item #285.
Space Surveyor X-12 #3862. Future toys page 135 item #205.
UFO-X05 #4670. Vintage toys top of page 133.

Did I mis any numbers that have been previously posted?
Anyone who has any Masudaya toys with the box please add the catalog number to this thread. Thank you.

Thank you Fineas for the start,
I will do my best when I come back to my home, I am still in Japan, but I am bringing back more infos from old catatalogs to feed the time line.
I will also start to collect the numbers "on the road", that means at toy shows, museums, collections, toy shops, catalogs etc. We do not have to buy or own these toys just to get this information.

I think to the list of numbers we should add the known years from catalogues we have collected already in the time line. (If they are existing for this toy).

Maybe also helpful would be a picture of the toy and box for other collectors who do not know or own that toy or the reference book. Some people just get interested in these toys if they become aware of it and its beauty , which can be found sometimes in details or in the box art.

(Maybe my wish list is too much for the effort, I try my best when I am posting more numbers).

Is there cryptic significance to the digits in these catalog numbers? If you take the numbers on their own, the sequential jumps are in the hundreds. Or is it that there were "that many" non-robot/space toys in the line that wore the "in-between" numbers?

::trying my best to confound without contributing -- all at the same time::

Good point Gernot. Also any excuse to take pictures of my toys are always welcome.

The X-17 Space Patrol (catalog #3117). My search of the timeline has found no listing for this toy yet, but I'm guessing early sixties.

The UFO-X05 (catalog #4670) not previously timeline dated as far as I can tell but I'm thinking mid seventies.

Hey Pat- Can you post your X-15 Robby Space Patrol saucer with the catalog number from the box?

Look what I found in the Time Line Topic, Joe did already a lot of homework, here are many numbers listed in the 1970 Masudaya Katalog, it is time to make a real list now.

to Keith ....and the rest of the world

Yes there are lot of numbers in the Masudayas cataloges for other toys and other articles.+ which fill up the holes

Guessing that they have started with the 3000 numbers in the late 50s (58 or 59, Sonicon is already at least from 1959, if not earlier) there would be some 700-800 toys in a time of more than 10 years.
This is not too much for a wholesale and exporting company.

If you see the catalogues you see that the new added toy numbers are almost in order.
The completely missing numbers might be cancelled toys which did not get into production or maybe other items which are not listed in the toy catalogs or they were not produced for this esport catalogs

It is difficult if they have reissued toys with changed features but kept the original number, such has happened for Sonicon Rocket Blue and checkered as well as for Lavender-Machineman and probaly for the uncounted versions of the flying saucers which have been sold until the late 80s.

Other companies, such as KO or Yonezawa used different numberseries for Windup and Battery operated toys.

We have a lot of work to do, lets just start collecting information.

And here is the "Radicon Space Pathfinder" No. 3660 from 1969 page of a toy ad ,
Joe could not find a reference.

I have added it also to the time line topic where it belongs.

Should we also put everything from this topic completely in the timeline talk and keep it running,

or what you you mean ....Brian ???

VT = Vintage Toys

Note:
Some box/catalog numbers appear to be way out of chronological order. See 3147 X-07 Space Surveillant for example. This space toy was produced with both a tin-headed pilot (1963) and a vinyl-headed pilot (1970). Masudaya used the same number for both.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When copying the post, the font style and highlighting embellishments are lost and must be re-entered in the pasted, updated entry. Thank goodness I have nothing better to do at 2 AM on a Sunday morning!

During my next bout of insomnia, I'll go through Jacky Broutin's catalog re-print book, Les Jouets Japonais/Japanese Toys From The Late 50's & 60's, and add the rest of the Masudaya catalog numbers to this timeline.

Fineas is right: looks like it's time to add a section, Joe, to develop your serial number strategy.

I'll start with the Masudaya details.

We are doing lot of work to get this Number-time-line for Masudaya (obviously it is a lot of fun rolleyes.gif ).

...but maybe all this information will be included in the coming book about Masudaya company ?
Who knows more about this book and when will it be issued ?

Today I have located another number, but now I see that it is already on the list, if it is the same thing, because I can t find the "7" on the box, is it on the toy ?

3791 Space Patrol (7) (B/O space vehicle with "big boy head")

(Joe check that reference again, if possible)

I ll post it anyway just to get you a view of this special piece I have seen.

The funny thing about it that I took it from an oversized display in one of Kitaharas shops including a small museum and a coffee shop in Osaka Universal Walk (near the Osaka universal studios fun-park. )
Some oversized fabricated boxes with some parts of oversized toys are hanging from the seiling. I had dinner there tonight and made a lot of photos of all the toys there (good for another topic).

Here is the shot I took from the "toy"

That number came from a copy of a 1970 Masudaya Toys Catalog I received through the generosity of Stan L. (zzrobot) and Larry Waldman (Cybertoyz). I still need to post photos on the Timeline of the space toys contained in this catalog. Surprisingly, there was not a single robot pictured in it!?!

Brian has "pinned" the Masudaya list at the top of the TIMELINE topic page. Thank you, Brian.

Might I suggest that all future posts on this topic be continued from there?
